How to Chain Prompts in Claude

Chaining prompts means splitting a complex task into smaller, focused steps. Each step builds on the previous output.

Why it works

Claude performs better when each prompt has a single, clear goal. Long, complex prompts with many instructions often produce mediocre results across all of them.

Example

Instead of: "Analyze this codebase, write tests, and create documentation"

Try:

  1. "Analyze this codebase and list the main modules" → get output
  2. "Given these modules, write unit tests for the auth module" → get output
  3. "Write documentation for the auth module based on these tests" → done
